This knot is used to tie something in to the middle of the rope with the potential to bear weight in two directions as in when tying in the middleman in glacier travel or lining several people up along a rope to pull something (such as a person) with a pulley (we call it a flying squirrel).

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Climbing rope
  1. Step 1

    Wrap the rope loosely around your hand three times. There should be three strands of rope across your open palm.

  2. Step 2

    Take the loop closest to your fingertips towards your wrist.

  3. Step 3

    Take the loop closest to your fingertips towards your wrist again, this time feeding the loop through the other loops back towards your fingertips.

  4. Step 4

    Pull the loop out tight.

  5. Step 5
    The complete knot.
    The complete knot.

    Pull the loose ends in opposite directions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your fingers spread wide when you wrap the rope around your hand to create enough space to actually tie the knot.
