  • a list of prospective clients

  • calendar of local events such as fairs, craft shows, and health screenings

How to Build a Client Base for a New Business

Step1
Know your target groups. Who would be interested in your services? Focus on organizations whose membership belong to that group.
Step2
Offer to do demonstrations at meetings. Answer questions. Pass out fliers describing your service and its benefits. Be sure to put your name, address and phone number on it, so future clients know where to find you.
Step3
Be outgoing! Socialize. Strike up conversations with people at the supermarket or sporting events. You never know who you'll meet. Always carry business cards to hand out.
Step4
Offer incentives. Give discounts on a weekly basis or to certain groups. Hand out VIP cards or gift cards with your logo on them.
Step5
Enlist your friends and family. Have them wear t-shirts with your logo on them. Give them fliers or brochures to hang up on the bulletin boards at their office or school.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't get discouraged. On average, only 1 out of 10 leads brings in a steady client.
  • The worst thing someone can say is no. Go on to the next person and keep trying.
  • Be considerate. If someone does say no, move on. Maybe you can try them again later.
  • Don't go overboard. If you over do, you may drive customers away.
