Teach a Parrot to Talk.
Teach a Parrot to Talk.

The following steps will assist in the activity of teaching a parrot to talk. There is no greater joy than to have a bird talking around the house. My parrot, Bo, welcomes all visitors with a friendly "Hello," and also bids them farewell with a cheery, "Bye!" Always take good care of your parrot, whether he talks or not. As always, my prayer for you and your loved ones is to remain healthy and safe, become wealthy, and grow wiser.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A parrot
  • Patience
  • A few chosen words
  • A tape recorder
  1. Step 1

    1. Usually words with one or two syllables are the easiest.
    2. The same person doing the talking is also beneficial.
    3. Teach the parrot to say only one word at a time.
    4. Choose your word, and say it over and over in front of the parrot.
    5. Record the word, over and over. Play the tape for the parrot throughout each day.
    6. Teaching a bird to say a word is a very dedicated effort, and persistence will win out in the end.

  2. Step 2

    1. Repeat the steps in step one. There is not anything magic about it.
    2. The parrot will eventually say the word, for parrots mock sounds.
    3. Parrots also learn the meanings of the words, and will use these words appropriately.

  3. Step 3

    1. Step three is more of step one and two.
    2. Be consistent, thorough, and determined.
    3. Be good to your parrot. Don't allow anyone to tease your parrot.
    4. Take good care of you parrot, feeding a variety of foods: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables. Purchase a book on parrots and follow the instructions.

Tips & Warnings
  • I taught our parrot to say my husband's name in one weekend, from Friday to Sunday evening. He says the name exactly the way I say the name. My husband doesn't know if to come when he hears his name or not to come for the parrot's voice sounds exactly like my voice.
  • Don't allow others to try to teach your bird to talk. He will get confused. Animals are very sensitive to the slightest variation in sounds, and the parrot's achievement at learning new words will be hindered, not helped.
  • The use of a tape recorder with you voice repeating the specific word can be of benefit and help hasten the process along.
  • A parrot has much strength in his beak. Be careful.

on 2/14/2008 Great Article Treciagayle! In addition to what you have we have found that Parrots learn even quicker from other parrots. So if you can get recordings of other parrots saying something your bird should pick it up quicker.
