Step1
As he enters sixth, seventh or eighth grade, depending on his maturity, talk to him about his leaving when he is older.
Step2
Some will stay home longer than others, but remember much of her day of departure depends on her maturity and her ability to support herself.
Step3
While he is growing up discuss with him where he would like to live when he’s older. This will get him to think about his adulthood and what he wants to do as an adult.
Step4
Talk about college and what she wants to do when she’s grown. Remember that she will change her mind many times before she is certain of her choice, but regardless she will still leave home to do it.
Step5
Go on vacations to different areas so she isn’t intimidated by different places and people.
Step6
Travel together, even if it’s short, half day trips. This will help him be comfortable in the idea of being somewhere new.
Step7
Teach her how to do the things she will need to know when she is on her own, such as laundry, cooking, budgeting and shopping.
Step8
Reassure him that his family will always be there and he can always come home.
