Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Show them respect. If a police officer stops you for a traffic violation, remember, he wasn't the one committing the offense. You were. It isn't his fault you were speeding or didn't stop at the light. He is doing his job. You're just upset because you got caught. Think about the time in the future that you may need him for something important, like an accident or a burglary. Would you be rude to him then?
Step2
Most police officers go home to families at the end of a shift. Think of their families. When an officer loses his life in the line of duty, check on their family. What do they need? Bring some covered dishes for them to eat. Offer to run an errand or just be a shoulder to lean on. Be considerate of their fellow officers.
Step3
If you are the first at the scene of an accident or other event, offer to assist in some way. There are many things that can be done until other officers arrive. Be considerate, if they say they have things under control, then go on your way. If they do need help, do what they ask. They will tell you when the situation is in hand and you are no longer needed.
Step4
Drop off cookies or other snacks at the local Fire House or Police Station. Don't wait till the holidays. The men and women who serve us in these capacities are report all year. Take in books that you don't read anymore, puzzles, games, magazines, etc. They do have down time occasionally.
Step5
If you've had an instance where you were helped by the police or the fire department, send them a Thank You note. Yes, they were just doing their job, but it makes their day to know that people really do appreciate them. They don't expect anything in return for the many services they perform. It is their job and they love to do it.
Step6
Talk to your local fitness centers and beauty salons. See if they can put together a package containing discounts and free services for the firefighters and police officers and their families. Massage relieves stress and will make them feel really good after a long day. Haircuts and other services can benefit them as well as their families.
