How to Make a Job Chart For Kids

Make household chores a family activity.

Sometimes coaxing kids into helping with chores can feel like more work, than just doing everything yourself. Including children in taking care of the house, teaches them responsibility. The Mayo Clinic even suggests giving kids jobs -- such as washing the car -- as a way of fighting obesity. A job chart will inspire your kids to get off the couch; and they may actually enjoy taking part in maintaining your household.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of all of the chores that your family needs to perform. Allow the children to take turns choosing the jobs that they prefer. Ensure that the jobs that each child picks are appropriate for his level of maturity.

    • 2

Draw three columns on the poster board. Write the names of the chores in one column. Label the second column with deadlines and save the third for stickers to indicate completed chores.

    • 3

Draw a picture of each job next to its name on the chart. The drawing will be especially helpful for children who do not yet read.

    • 4

Hang the chart on the refrigerator or another place where everyone will see it easily. Attach a sticker to the third column next to each chore a child completes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Involve the kids as much as possible in making the chart. A sense of ownership over it can improve their enthusiasm for finishing their jobs and receiving stickers.

  • Assign age-appropriate chores. Do not allow small children to select tasks that involve using sharp objects, or make them solely responsible for the care of pets.
