How to Create a Free Website With SynthaSite thumbnail
In spite of still being in beta when I tested SynthaSite, it worked quite well.

SynthaSite offers web page building tools and free web hosting. Here is how to create a website using SynthaSite.

Things You'll Need

  • A web browser
  • A SynthaSite account

Instructions

    • 1

Go to SynthaSite.com and open an account. You will receive an email to confirm your email address. Respond to this to get ready to work.

    • 2

Click Create New Site to open the tools.

    • 3

Pick a page style. There are many to choose from. Double-click the one you want.

    • 4
      The Widgets on SynthaSite

Drag and Drop from the Widgets menu to add content to your page. The available widgets include Photos, Video, Your Minis (which include a Countdown widget, an RSS Reader and a Skype Me! widget), Images, Text, a two-column layout and an HTML widget.

    • 5
The toolbar across the top of the workspace contains options such as New Page.

The top menu bar includes an option to add a New Page.

    • 6
A new page can be on the menu-or not.

You can opt to include any new page in the main navigation menu. If you don't add it to the menu, you can create a link to it from one of the main pages.

    • 7

When you drag a text widget onto a page, you have a full menu bar for text formatting, alignment and tasks such as adding a hyperlink to highlighted text.

    • 8
      The hyperlink dialog window

When you add a hyperlink, the link editor opens. You can link to a page on your site, to an external site, or add an email link.

    • 9
You have some control over the CSS effect elements you add to a page.

Among the text Properties options, you can change the top, right, bottom and left margin settings (using pixels only) to help place your text where you want it. You have the same options when adding an image widget to your page, plus you can set an image to left align, center align or right align.

This option would appeal to anyone who has a basic knowledge of CSS.

    • 10
Save each page before you attempt to publish.

As you get each page completed, click the Save Page button on the menu bar at the top. You can tell if you have saved a page by looking at the page tabs on the menu bar. Any unsaved page will have an asterisk (*) next to the page name.

    • 11
Simply click Publish when you're finished.

When you've built and saved all the pages you want, click the Publish button.

    • 12
      The publish dialog window

The first time you publish, you choose the URL for your free domain hosted by SynthaSite. This is your URL (website address), so choose carefully. You can also download everything to be published on a domain or at a web hosting space of your own choosing. (This last option would not be free.)

You can see the demo site I made while writing this article. (See Resources for the link.)

To edit or add to your site, simply sign in again to SynthaSite and go to work.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no way provided to add alt text for an image. This is a big accessibility no-no. SynthaSite could add this option to the Image Properties panel without much effort, and I hope it will be done before SynthaSite goes out of beta.
