Step 1
Avoid over-the-counter topical flea, tick and heartworm preventatives. They have not undergone the rigorous laboratory testing that prescription preventatives have. Paying a few dollars more to get a safer product may save you a large vet bill and maybe even your dog's life!
-
Step 2
Know the chemical that is the active ingredient in your dog's parasite prevention program. This will allow you to research the product and be informed about any safety concerns regarding it. This is also good information to have in the event your dog has a bad reaction to a particular preventative product.
-
Step 3
Discuss your parasite prevention program with your dog's veterinarian and ask for recommendations.
-
Step 4
Discuss the various products you are considering with other pet owners and professionals. Having some insight into the experiences others have had may help you decide which preventative is right for your dog.
-
Step 5
Read the instructions on the product's packaging to be sure the program will work for your dog's individual circumstances.
-
Step 6
Take a holistic approach to parasite prevention. Research holistic products in the same way you do pharmaceutical products. Just because it is "natural" does not mean that it does not come with risks and concerns.
