With all the products available, many dog owners wonder how to find a safe flea, tick and heartworm preventative. There are shots, pills, topical applications, sprays and collars. You can also take a holistic approach. Since most methods of preventing these parasites involve using toxic chemicals, it is best to be an informed consumer and take steps to use these preventatives in a safe manner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Avoid over-the-counter topical flea, tick and heartworm preventatives. They have not undergone the rigorous laboratory testing that prescription preventatives have. Paying a few dollars more to get a safer product may save you a large vet bill and maybe even your dog's life!

  2. Step 2

Know the chemical that is the active ingredient in your dog's parasite prevention program. This will allow you to research the product and be informed about any safety concerns regarding it. This is also good information to have in the event your dog has a bad reaction to a particular preventative product.

  3. Step 3

Discuss your parasite prevention program with your dog's veterinarian and ask for recommendations.

  4. Step 4

Discuss the various products you are considering with other pet owners and professionals. Having some insight into the experiences others have had may help you decide which preventative is right for your dog.

  5. Step 5

Read the instructions on the product's packaging to be sure the program will work for your dog's individual circumstances.

  6. Step 6

Take a holistic approach to parasite prevention. Research holistic products in the same way you do pharmaceutical products. Just because it is "natural" does not mean that it does not come with risks and concerns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take extra care with young, small and elderly dogs. They are often more sensitive to chemicals. Speak with your vet about the best approach.
  • Bathe and groom your dog regularly.
  • Keep your dog's sleeping area clean.
  • Do not overuse toxic chemicals on your dog. Constant exposure to flea and tick preventatives can cause other health issues.
