How to Plan a Super Bowl Party When Your Team Isn't in It

Day is done, gone the sun. "Taps" has played for your team this football season, and the play-offs have begun without your boys in blue, orange, gold, silver--well, I need not go on. Or maybe your team reached the play-off, and now they’re going home. “Now what?” you may be wailing. Please don’t pout and scowl until the start of training camp. The Super Bowl is right around the corner, and it’s still a great reason to throw a party, even if your team didn’t make the play-offs. You can still have a fun time during this celebration on the most popular of unofficial American holidays—Super Bowl Sunday.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A bunch of cool friends
  • Party food and drinks
  • Sets of number cards, numbered 1 through 4 for each person

Step1
Eat. Every great party begins with great food. Chili, pizza, submarine sandwiches and sloppy joes are good Super Bowl party foods. Cookies and cupcakes are good desserts, as well as the requisite munchies: pop and beer.
Step2
Declare sides. If you have no alliances, you still can make it interesting by having everybody choose a team. When people walk in the door, unless they’re actually for one of the teams, have each person pull a team name or conference from a hat or bag. If they want, they don’t have to keep that team throughout the game. They can jump back and forth depending on who’s winning.
Step3
Play football squares. This can liven things up and give people a stake in the game. People can buy a square for a buck, and you can award the winners per quarter.
Step4
Play “fantasy” football. This is not the traditional fantasy football. Here is where imagination comes in. Pretend that those playing are your players. For example, if one of the Super Bowl quarterbacks wears the number 7, you can call him Ben Roethlisberger, or if one of the running backs wears the number 21, you can call him Ladainian Tomlinson. If the New England Patriots are playing, you can pretend the other team is the 85 Bears.
Step5
Rate commercials. After each commercial, have everybody rate it by holding up one of his number cards.
Step6
Enjoy the company. Ultimately, it’s not who wins or loses the Super Bowl, it’s about the fun you had with the friends who were there.
