How to Have Your Child Use Wheeled Shoes Safely

Check out playgrounds, schoolyards and malls where kids congregate and you'll notice that wheeled shoes are all the rage. But like the bicycles, skateboards and in-line skates that came before them, wheeled shoes pose their own set of safety hazards.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Protective gear
  • Smooth surface
  • Adult supervision
Step1
Make sure your child wears protective gear. Treat wheeled shoes the same way you would a bike or skateboard. Your child shouldn't use them unless he straps on a helmet. And because kids using wheeled shoes tend to break their falls with the wrist or elbow, using pads on these areas is prudent, too.
Step2
Stick to smooth surfaces, such as gyms. A bumpy sidewalk or gravely street can easily upend your child, especially a novice.
Step3
Keep a close eye on your child. Just like riding a bike, using wheeled shoes takes some practice. Stick by your child while she's learning.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some experts claim that children younger than eight shouldn't use wheeled shoes. Many young children simply don't have the physical dexterity and coordination to use them successfully.
