How to Dress to Impress Your Peers

Did you ever start a new job and feel like the entire office staff was staring at you and secretly discussing your appearance? Or did you ever join a company and feel like you were dressed for a wedding and should be wearing blue jeans? Here are a few suggestions on how to dress to fit in with the rest of the staff and give your peers a good impression.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Observe how the other employees are dressed during your interview. This will give you insight as to whether their dress code is formal or informal, casual or relaxed. The interviewer is usually management and they set the stage for how they want their office staff to dress, so if this is an office position, take note on how they appear.
Step2
Dress simply but nicely on that first day. You don’t want to stand out as someone who is trying to show up the rest of the office, but rather, like someone who is willing to blend with the rest of the office.
Step3
Keep jewelry to a minimum. You may be someone who loves to wear lots of rings and bracelets and necklaces, but first impressions could be that you are flaunting your riches and this could be setting a bad stage for yourself. Keep your jewelry on low keel until you feel comfortable enough to start wearing it. Then, you can slowly add more, but be careful not to overdo it and become showy.
Step4
Keep your perfume fragrances light. You don’t want to cause animosity over who smells the best or the most. Once you realize that this is not an issue, you can try wearing your perfume and see what response you get. If there is any allergic reaction with your peers, you probably will have to keep your perfume in the bottle. If not, then wear it but keep in mind that it should be a scent that goes with you, not one that leads the way.
Step5
Be careful not to dress seductively or carelessly to give the wrong indication of your employment intentions, but rather keep yourself professional at all times, even if it’s casual or relaxed dress.

Tips & Warnings

  • You want to develop a working relationship with your peers based on your mental and physical abilities as part of a team. If this job incorporates a career ladder, you want to climb it with stability, knowing that each rung represents dignity, integrity and challenge. Don’t let wrong impressions prevent you from going up.
  • You need to keep a respectable balance. So, while it is important to be accepted by your peers, it is also important that you keep your own identity. And that means not compromising to the point where you become someone else to impress your peers.
