The publishing industry is packed with competition. Because of the amount of submissions editors receive, many of them will only accept query letters. The goal of the author is to get a request from an editor to see a full manuscript, so writing a good query letter is essential. Here are few tips for making your query letter stand out.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Plain white paper (a simple heading with the author's name and contact information is optional)
  • Envelopes
  • Stamps
  • Copy of the latest Writer's Market or a list of prospective publishers
  1. Step 1

Know what types of romances your target publisher publishes. There are many subgenres in the romance genre, and not all publishers publish all types. Make sure your book fits what they publish. For example, don't query Steeple Hill, a Christian romance line, about your dark paranormal featuring vampires and werewolves.

  2. Step 2

Find out the editor's name. Nothing frustrates an editor more than to receive a generic "Dear Editor" query letter. This shows the editor that you aren't conscientious enough to find out his name, which means you might not be conscientious enough for him to want to work with you.

  3. Step 3

Introduce yourself in the first sentence. "I am a published author of twelve novels," will suffice. If you don't have any publishing credentials, show the editor you are familiar with her line. "St. Martin's is one of the premiere publishers of romance fiction. I would like to submit my romantic suspense, "Lady Killer," for your consideration."

  4. Step 4

Summarize your book in two or three sentences. State the main character or characters, the romantic conflict and leave the editor wanting to read the rest of your story. For example: "In 'Lady Killer', Tamara Martin is running for her life. When she hides out in a small town she reluctantly forms a friendship with Sheriff Rory Jackson. Her secret is exposed when her ex-husband shows up, threatening to kill her. Can Rory protect her from this psychopath? Even more important, can he forgive her for not telling him the truth?"

  5. Step 5

State the word count and the status of the manuscript. "My 75,000 word manuscript is complete."

  6. Step 6

Include a synopsis with your query. If the publisher accepts them at that time. Mention at the bottom of your query letter that you are including the synopsis.

  7. Step 7

Thank the editor for her time and consideration.

  8. Step 8

Sign the letter with "Sincerely" and your name. If you don't have formal stationery already printed with your contact information at the top, include it at the bottom of the letter. Include your home address, telephone number and email address.

  9. Step 9

Include a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) if required by the publisher.

Tips & Warnings
  • It usually takes anywhere from six weeks to six months for editors to respond to a query, so be patient. If you haven't heard from the editor after six months, send a follow up letter.
