Know how the class registration system works. Most systems are solely online now so get to know how it works. You can generally do a few dry runs or at least explore the website.
Step2
Look over the class catalog in advance. Write down class numbers and class ID number/reference numbers. Try to make a schedule on your own but make sure to have plenty of backups because prime classes go quick.
Step3
Check out the professors on sites like RateMyProfessor.com. A good teacher can make or break a class.
Step4
Be prompt to your appointed time of registration. Even a few minutes can cost you some classes. Lots and lots of kids all get to register at once. Grab classes that are hot first and move from there.
Step5
Think of your classes as a whole. Don’t block 3 classes in a row if you cannot handle that. Don’t set up classes that are on Thursday nights or Fridays if you aren’t going to be able to attend them.
Step6
Be aware that if you have friends that are honor students or athletes, they will be able to register first. Most universities allow them to register for more classes than they will actual end up taking. You can have them register for a class for you. They will be, in essence, holding a spot in class until you can register. All they have to do is drop the class at a specific time when you can quickly swoop it up.
Tips & Warnings
After first semester of freshman year you’ll have a lot more freedom in terms of scheduling classes.
With a limited number of exceptions (such as required classes or a class you have been dying to take) the class time is just as important as the class itself.
