Babies can become very expensive very fast. Even before your baby is born, you have plenty of spending to do on all of the necessary gear-the bassinette, the crib, clothing, diapers, toys, books on parenting, and on and on and on. But a baby does not have to be such a financial burden as there are plenty of ways to spend only small amounts on your little one.

How to Reduce Spending on a Baby

  1. Step 1

Have a baby shower. Whether someone throws a baby shower for you or you set it up for yourself, it is a great way to celebrate with friends and family while getting a few necessities for your new baby. Often people will put their money together in order to give a more expensive gift such as a crib or a swing. Or maybe you will receive all of the smaller items that can really add up.

  2. Step 2

Accept hand-me-downs. Your baby grows so quickly, you will only use his clothes for a few months before he can no longer fit into them. By using clothes from friends and family, you will save buckets of money. Most of the clothing will be like new when you receive it because all babies use clothing for such a short time. It is possible to never buy your baby an outfit if you don’t want to.

  3. Step 3

Shop at thrift stores and garage sales. All thrift stores will have a baby section, and because baby clothing and gear is used for such a short time, you can find some fantastic deals on nearly new items for your little one.

  4. Step 4

Breastfeed your baby. It is the healthiest option for feeding your child for at least the first year, and it is free! You will be amazed at how much money you will save if you don’t have to buy expensive formula for your baby.

  5. Step 5

Use cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are always less expensive than disposable diapers-even with a diaper service to wash them for you.

  6. Step 6

Use household items as toys. Babies tend to prefer normal items that you have around the house as compared to store-bought toys. Water bottles with a small amount of water left in them, wooden spoons, and rubber spatulas are only a few examples. Paper of all sorts is generally a favorite and can keep a five month old busy for at least twenty minutes!
