Teaching your wife about football is not as hard as some might think. If you have patience and a sense of humor, then you can have your wife by your side and into the games on Sundays.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Any explanation of the game must start with the basics. Explain that 2 teams are trying to move the football to the opposite end of the field. When 1 team gets the ball all the way to the end, it is a good thing. That gets them points. If they move it far enough to get the ball kicked between the yellow posts, then they get 3 points. Those are the basics.

  2. Step 2

The one thing that confuses your wife if she does not know football is understanding the logic of first, second and third downs. Here is how to explain it. Each team gets 4 tries to get another set of 4 tries. If they get 10 yards or more, they get another set of 4 downs. If not, then they usually punt, or kick a field goal, on fourth down so that the other team does not get the ball in such a good place on the field. Every time the team with the ball moves the ball more than 10 yards, they start all over with new downs.

  3. Step 3

Have your wife adopt a team to pull for early. Answer her questions, but let her pick her team alone. This will give her some investment into the game.

  4. Step 4

Help her learn the team she pulls for. Teach her the players and what they bring to the team. This will help her to become a fan.

  5. Step 5

Finally, have your wife pick the games each week. She will quickly learn who is good and bad, and why. This is the best way to get her into football. Let her learn through a fun little contest with you. She just might beat you!

on 3/21/2008 This is great. I'm one of those who has trouble and nobody ever really wants to explain it. I tell my husband I don't think he really knows what's going on. I've probably learned the most from this article.

on 1/16/2008 Fortunately, I don't have this problem. My wife and I have been avid Penn State and Steeler fans for all 36 years of marriage. She is so savvy, she knows how to read defenses and watches the o-line. she Do you remember the Football Test from the movie "Diner".This test could save a lot of marriages.
