Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Plan a dinner or other small get-together. If you're worried about how your family will react, it is best to set up a fun atmosphere in which everyone involved can be comfortable. A dinner or other family get-together will make it easier to tell your family you're in an interracial relationship because their guards will be down. Make sure those whose opinions are most important to you are able to attend.
Step2
Practice what you will tell them beforehand. As they say, practice makes perfect, and you will be less nervous if you have an idea of what you will say. If you need to, practice with your mate to make sure you're honest but firm in what you say. Don't be intimidated to tell your family that you're in an interracial relationship.
Step3
Tell your family how great your new relationship is going. Explain to them that you are in love and how well your mate treats you. By first letting them know that you've found someone that you care for and that cares for you, you are making it difficult for them not to like your mate regardless of race.
Step4
Reveal to your family that your mate is of a different race. It is best to just let them know that you love your mate and his race isn't an issue for you. Unless your family has previously expressed dissatisfaction with interracial relationships, they should accept the relationship and give you their blessings.
Step5
Inform your family that you are only telling them as a courtesy and that their opinion will not change your relationship. The only power your family will have over this situation is the power that you give them, so be clear that you hope they approve but if they don't, it will not change anything between you and your mate.
