Create your own tablecloth by printing with potatoes. The starchy liquid that comes from a cut potato blends with the ink to add a beautiful look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • old blanket
  • thumb tacks
  • white, cotton tablecloth, prewashed
  • medium, fresh potato
  • sharp knife
  • cutting board
  • utility knife
  • small paintbrush
  • paper
  • fabric painting ink
  • paper plate
  • small gloss paint roller
  • needle and thread
  • iron
  1. Step 1

Pin the blanket to your work surface with the thumb tacks and arrange the tablecloth on top of it.

  2. Step 2

Use the sharp knife to cut through the potato to give a flat, cut surface. Practice drawing the design you want to use on paper first. When you are confident with the drawing on paper, paint it onto the potato using ink.

  3. Step 3

Cut around the outline using the craft knife. Cut away the waste approximately 1/4". Using the kitchen knife, trim the sides of the potato to make it square and cut in a groove about halfway down to make it easier to hold.

  4. Step 4

Put your ink on the paper plate or mix colors until you have the color you want. Run the small paint roller through the ink until it is coated well. Apply an even coating of the ink to the surface of the potato stamp.

  5. Step 5

Print in a random pattern on the tablecloth, re-inking the potato after every two prints. Leave to dry.

  6. Step 6

Set the paints using a warm, dry iron. Hem the raw edges of the tablecloth if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Print a set of napkins to match the tablecloth.
