Make your own set of custom cotton napkins with plain cotton napkins and colorfast dyes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ruler
  • pencil
  • tracing paper
  • white, cotton napkins, prewashed
  • push pins
  • painting frame or suitable substitute
  • vanishing fabric marker
  • double boiler
  • general purpose wax
  • tjanting
  • colorfast dyes in your choice of colors
  • medium spongebrush
  • brown paper or newspaper
  1. Step 1

Draw a cross in the center of one of the napkins. Pin it to the frame so that it is stretched tight.

  2. Step 2

Draw your design on the tracing paper with a cross in the center to line up with the napkin. Turn the frame upside down over the design, lining up the crosses.

  3. Step 3

Trace the design onto the fabric with the vanishing fabric marker. Heat the wax in the double boiler

  4. Step 4

Using the tjanting, draw the design with the wax. There should be no breaks in the outline and the cloth will appear somewhat transparent where the wax is. Check both sides to make sure you have enough wax that it goes through all the way.

  5. Step 5

Paint whatever colors you wish to use in your design background using the spongebrush. Allow to dry between colors.

  6. Step 6

Remove the napkin from the frame when completely dry. Place between sheets of brown paper or newspaper and iron to remove wax.

Tips & Warnings
  • After painted, the fabric must be dry cleaned only.
