Bike the South Bay Bicycle Trail

The South Bay Bicycle Trail runs for 22 miles alongside the Los Angeles coast from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance Co. Beach and provides a unique way to see a long stretch of Pacific coastline and get some exercise. With easy points of entry and exit, cyclists can make the ride as long or as short as they desire. For the most part, the path is both wide and flat, allowing riders in a range physical shape to take part.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin the trip at Will Rogers State Beach, bordering the Pacific Coast Highway, and observe excellent views of the rugged Malibu terrain to the north. Head south to Santa Monica.

  2. Step 2

At Santa Monica State Beach, find the largest selection of rental shops. (You should pick up the path here if you need to rent a bike.) Get out and explore the Santa Monica Pier for carnival games, snacks and amusements.

  3. Step 3

Next, head to Venice City Beach for the curviest and most heavily trafficked portion of the path. Beware of pedestrians suddenly crossing the bike path on their way to the beach. Lock up the bike to partake in some best street shopping in Los Angeles at the Venice Strand. Peruse handmade jewelry, interesting clothing, touristy goods and artwork. Grab a bite from a small vendor, watch the street performers or have your Tarot cards read.

  4. Step 4

At the Venice pier, turn left onto Washington Blvd. for a ride through the side streets of Marina del Rey. Be sure to follow the bike path signs. Bike through the wildlife refuge and cross the intersection at Admiralty Way to ride past the world’s largest man made small craft harbor.

  5. Step 5

Pass Ballona Creek and cross the Pacific Ave. Bridge towards El Segundo. Ride through a long stretch of un-commercialized sand at Dockweiler State Beach and El Porto Beach.

  6. Step 6

After passing the smoke stacks of a local power plant, head to the famous South Bay beaches: Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo. Each features a pier and a sampling of authentic beach life. Stop for a breather and watch surfers and volleyball pick-up games.

  7. Step 7

If you need a break, stop in Manhattan Beach for some great window- shopping, or at Hermosa for a bite at one of many beach cafes.

  8. Step 8

When you reach Torrance Co. Beach, turn around and head back the way you came. The trail dead ends at the Palo Verdes hills.
