How to Walk When It's Slippery Outside

Whether you're trying to get some exercise or just maneuver on an icy sidewalk, walking in the snow, ice or slush can be tricky and sometimes downright treacherous. To make sure you stay on your feet, wear shoes with traction-grabbing treads (think winter boots, not high heels) and practice these tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Walk with your feet slightly apart. When feet are too close together, balance is thrown off. Balance is your best protection against falls.

  2. Step 2

Keep your knees slightly bent. Again, bent knees help to evenly distribute your weight, thus improving balance.

  3. Step 3

Walk down a hill sideways. If you point your feet straight down a slippery slope, gravity is apt to take over. That's fine if you're skiing, not so great if you're trying to get down your icy driveway. Walking sideways helps you get and maintain proper footing and balance your weight, all essential for safe winter walking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your dominant arm free (that's the right arm if you're right-handed, the left if you're left-handed). So if you're carrying a package, a bag or umbrella, hold it with your weaker arm. The thinking: If you have to break your fall, it's better to do so with your stronger, more conditioned arm.
