With the advent of home computers and the popularity of video games, many teenagers are choosing to spend their free time inside using their technology instead of engaging in physical activity. Here are some tips for getting your teen off My Space and into exercise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • various types of sports equipment
  • time
  • patience
  1. Step 1

Discuss the benefits of exercise with your teen. Exercise not only keeps you at a healthy weight, but it also increases stamina and improves mood and attitude. Engaging in physical activity on a regular basis while your young also has beneficial effects on your body as you age.

  2. Step 2

Discuss with your teen the types of physical activity she is interested in doing. If she enjoys sports, encourage her to sign up to play on a team, either at school or in the community. If she's more interested in aerobics or dance, encourage her to join a gym or sign up at a dance studio. The type of activity doesn't matter--the important thing is that she enjoys it.

  3. Step 3

Schedule a daily time to engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes. This can be as simple as taking a walk outside or lifting weights indoors.

  4. Step 4

Offer to exercise with your teen. Studies have shown that people tend to exercise more often when they exercise with a partner or group. If he doesn't want you as his partner, encourage him to buddy up with a friend.

  5. Step 5

Model good exercise habits. Let your teen see you exercising or playing sports on a regular basis. This will encourage her to join you or develop her own exercise routine.

  6. Step 6

Support your teen in his physical pursuits. Attend his basketball games or take him to the park to play tennis. Allow him to spend time at the gym or to rollerblade with his friends. He will appreciate your support and encouragement.

Tips & Warnings
  • If joining a gym or playing a sport is too expensive, brainstorm ideas with your teen about other activities that be done cheaply. Walking, working out to exercise videos and yard work are only a few ways to get physically active.
