How to Save Money for Travel

Traveling can be a very expensive venture, and saving money for any type of travel is always a daunting task. If a vacation, holiday, volunteer expedition, or extended trip is known about in advance, there are a number of steps that can be taken to ensure enough funding for the journey.

1. Begin saving in advance. As soon as you decide to travel-even if you don’t know where you will go-start putting money away.
2. Set a goal. Once you determine where you want to go, what type of trip you want to take, and for how long, you can decide how much money you will need to cover all of your necessary expenses.
3. Open a savings account. You will earn interest on every penny you put into a savings account. It might not be much, but it all counts in the end.
4. Take a certain percentage out of each paycheck you receive and put it in your savings account. Set a reasonable percentage so you can still survive on what will go into your checking account, but make sure it is high enough to make a dent in the funds you will need. This money will most likely comprise the majority of the funds for your trip.
5. Save all of your change in a specific piggy bank, jar or container. Don’t use any of the change for other purchases until the time for your trip arrives. You will be surprised at how much you can save in this way!
6. Seek out extra income that you can specifically put towards your travels. Research studies, question and answer panels, and other “et cetera” jobs can be found fairly easily online. Rake leaves or mow lawns in your neighborhood. Offer to babysit for a family you know or watch someone’s pets while they are away. These jobs may take a few extra hours every week, but it will be worth it when you finally have the chance to embark on your travels. Every time you earn extra money put it directly into your savings account.
7. Write a letter explaining the purpose of your trip and how much money you are trying to raise. Send it to everyone you know. This method works especially well for a volunteer mission but can be tried for any type of traveling. Every time you receive money from the letter put it directly into your savings account.
