How to Switch a One-Year-Old From Formula to Milk

Babies drink either breast milk or formula for the first year of their life. Some parents choose to go with a second-stage formula for another year, thinking that it benefits their child’s nutrition. The truth is that as long as your one-year-old is eating a variety of foods, regular milk can be introduced. Making that switch can be made easier by following the tips below.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Regular Formula
  • Regular Milk

Step1
Begin by substituting one fourth of the formula with regular milk. If the child is normally taking an 8-ounce bottle or sippy cup, you would start with 6 ounces of formula and 2 ounces of milk.
Step2
Wait at least a week, before making the mix half and half. If you normally give formula at room temperature, make sure the mixture is the same.
Step3
Increase the milk to three quarters and reduce the formula to one quarter in the third week.
Step4
Serve regular milk alone beginning the fourth week. By then the child will be used to the taste and is not as likely to balk at the new food.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch after each increase of regular milk for any symptoms of hidden allergies.
  • Once the child has gotten use to regular milk, you can begin to serve it straight from the refrigerator.
  • Even though your child may not be verbal yet, make it a big deal when you finally make the full switch to regular milk or ‘big kid’ milk.
  • Feed your child a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, cereals and other good foods. Do not rely on milk alone for their nutritional needs.
  • While most babies are ready for regular milk at one year of age, check with your child’s pediatrician if you have any questions.
