Gifts that will show you put some thought into them don't always have to take up a lot of time and money. Just put your thinking cap on and put yourself in the place of the recipient. Once you understand what they like to read, see, do or eat, finding a great gift will be simple.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Think about the person receiving the gift and any hobbies, interests or activities they might enjoy. Try to hone in on one particular activity or aspect of their personality.
Step2
Think about the recipient's favorite activity and all the items associated with it. Some items are necessary, while others are more like accessories. Your gift should be more of a luxury item than a necessity, because if it's a necessity, chances are the person already has it.
Step3
Focus on how that activity could be made easier, more fun or more worry-free. Purchase an item that falls into one of these categories. For example, if the person is an avid kayaker, chances are they don't need a new paddle. However, they may not have a waterproof camera or backpack.
Step4
If you aren't very familiar with the hobby or activity, a quick Internet search can give you some insight into what related items might be appropriate.
Step5
Research any gift certificates, club memberships or yearly subscriptions of either magazines or hard goods that may enhance the giftee's hobby. There are publications out there that cater to just about every interest.

Tips & Warnings

  • If someone does engage in a certain activity a lot, they may have some of the luxury items you're thinking of purchasing. You can always ask them a few questions, such as "What's the greatest picture you've ever taken during one of your kayaking trips?" to see if they already have a waterproof camera.
  • Though luxury items are meant as luxuries, you want to make sure that the item is practical as well. Think about the person and what they love about their activity. If they like the idea of "roughing it," a compass or GPS system may not be the perfect gift, but perhaps a nicely framed map of their favorite campsite or hiking trail could be.
