Sometimes laughter is inappropriate, yet seemingly uncontrollable. Here are some tips to control nervous or otherwise inappropriate laughter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visualize something depressing, unpleasant, or makes you want to cry.

  2. Step 2

    Pinch yourself.

  3. Step 3

    Bite your tongue.

  4. Step 4

    Bite your inner cheeks.

  5. Step 5

    Hold your breath.

  6. Step 6

Purse your lips so as not to smile.

  7. Step 7

Cough with your hand over your mouth to disguise a laugh. With coughing, you can even escape from the room.

  8. Step 8

    Exhale continuously.
Take long, deep breaths through your nose (not your mouth).

  9. Step 9

    Clamp your teeth together hard.

  10. Step 10

Physically pull the corners of your mouth down into a frown.

  11. Step 11

    Flex your muscles.

  12. Step 12

Count backwards from 10 to 1 in your head. Repeat if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use one or a combination of techniques above.
  • Holding your breath can result in bursting out laughing very loudly if your laughter was not controlled. Use caution when demonstrating this technique.
