Some photographers, like me, are really frustrated artists. I can't draw, which is probably what led me to a lifetime of work in photography and the graphic arts. However, thanks to the miracle of computer software, I can now pretend with the best of them. There is a neat software application, Photo to Sketch Pro, that allows you to take any JPEG or BMP image and convert it to a pen, pencil or pastel drawing. Print your result on high quality linen stock and convince your friends you actually have some talent! You can download this free application at the link below.

Instructions

    • 1
      Open Your Photo

Open your image by clicking on the OPEN button. Choose the sort of sketch you want: pen, pencil or pastel. You can automatically convert the entire image or have more fun by "painting" the image freehand.

    • 2
      Adjust Lines and Precision

You can sketch with up to 15 lines by adjusting the line slider and can control the amount of detail in the sketch with the precision slider.

    • 3
      Adjusting Brush Size

When using the freehand option, you can adjust the brush size and begin to paint the image. This method allows the user to eliminate parts of the original by not painting in that area.

      Sketching Freehand

Notice that by sketching this freehand, I have eliminated the distracting line in the background. Within seconds, we have a pencil sketch. Save the sketch to a file. You can later edit the sketch using the editing tools after it has been saved.

    • 5
      Pastels Sketch

This sketch was made using the pastels option. Notice we have also changed the precision and lines option which changes the nature of the sketch.

    • 6
      Adding Backgrounds

You can also add a background to the sketch and import your own backgrounds from existing JPEG or BMP files.

    • 7
      Final edit

Once you have completed and saved the sketch, click on the EDIT/PRINT function. This will open a full featured image editor. You can change colors, backgrounds, add text and even change the skew of the sketch. You can also add borders and other shapes.
