Things You'll Need:
- Computer with Internet access
- Map of Charleston
-
Step 1
Go online and research current theatre listings in the local papers, on the College of Charleston Department of Theatre website, the Piccolo Spoleto website, and on various troupes' sites.
-
Step 2
If you are visiting Charleston during Piccolo Spoleto in May/June, make sure to book your tickets early to ensure availability and lower ticket prices.
-
Step 3
Always book tickets as much in advance as possible, and use a student or senior discount if possible.
-
Step 4
The College of Charleston Department of Theatre uses several venues. The larger one is the Emmett Robinson Theatre, while the stages used for smaller productions include the Chapel Theatre and Theatre 220. If you're a bit of a night owl, check out one of the midnight weekend screenings in Theatre 220. (The Footlight Players also occasionally hold late-night screenings).
-
Step 5
During Piccolo Spoleto, shows that received critical acclaim during the regular theatre season often get a reprise. Research this online and book tickets to productions that have already gotten rave reviews! Some of these are student productions that will not be very expensive.
-
Step 6
Look for plays that have a Q&A or "Talkback" session following the show, especially if you are interested in hearing more about the play, cast or production.
-
Step 7
If you are hoping to get involved in the theatre scene in Charleston, check out when auditions are being held and contact directors. Technical and backstage opportunities are almost always in demand.
