Sometimes you live somewhere that’s going to be strictly temporary. There are other times when you’re upgrading or just moved into a new home and curtains aren’t the first thing you want to go out and buy. Getting the style of a room together is something to that can take time and there’s no reason to spend tons of money on curtains you may not like in the end. But the privacy of covered windows is important and not everyone leaves blinds or shades behind. It’s easy to whip up some window camouflage while you unpack and get settled in. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric
  • Iron
  • Surface on which to iron
  • Scissors
  • A few straight pins
  • Fusible bonding tape (No Sew Hemming Tape, Stitch Witchery)
  • Tacks or curtain rods

    How to Make Simple Curtains

  1. Step 1

Measure the windows you want to cover. If you have a tape measure, great, but if you don’t, have no fear. You can use nearly any type of string, rope or the like to get the measurements you need. Add about eight inches to the length to allow for a small hem at the top and some overhang and a hem at the bottom. You can measure for just one panel for each window; but most windows are too wide and need two panels. And two panels look nicer.

  2. Step 2

Go to your local fabric store with your measurements and buy accordingly. For instance you have three windows in your bedroom and the length you’ve come up with is 48 inches? You need about eight yards of fabric (36 inches in a yard). There can be fabrics in the bargain bin that are better than serviceable.

  3. Step 3

At the fabric store you’ll also get your bonding tape. There are some different names and brands, but what it does is allows you to simply iron in a hem, no sewing or machine necessary. Make sure you’ve bought enough for the top and bottom hems and, if you want to have a more finished look, small side hems. One roll does go a long way.

  4. Step 4

When you get home, cut your fabric into the necessary lengths. Heat the iron. No need to have a million straight pins, but to help with a straight line, use a few to keep your hem straight.

  5. Step 5

If you want to do the side hems, you only need to fold over about an inch. Pin the hem about a half inch into the fold and slide the strip of bonding tap under the other half inch.

  6. Step 6

Iron the fold. This should bind the hem instantly. Allow it to cool and test the bond by gently tugging at the hem.

  7. Step 7

If there are already curtain rods in the room, allow room in the top hem to feed the curtain through the rod. Repeat the steps from the side hems. At the desired length, repeat the bonding steps for the bottom hem.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the room does not have curtain rods, the curtains can be tacked on the top lip of the window frame.
  • Do not iron on the carpet. It will melt and any other floor surface will also get ruined with the heat of an iron.
