How to Sew on Appliqués

How to Sew on Appliqués thumbnail
Sew applique to your clothing using a sewing machine or by hand.

Appliques -- pieces of fabric -- can be used for both practical and decorative purposes. The same technique can be used to apply a patch over holes in your clothing and to create fantastic wall hangings or quilts. Sew your appliques on by hand or use a sewing machine for extra convenience. Though many decorative stitches can be used, a basic running stitch is the easiest for beginning sewers.

Instructions

  1. Machine Sewing

    • 1

Attach the applique to your fabric or garment with sewing pins.

    • 2

Set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch.

    • 3

Insert the applique under the foot of the sewing machine. The edge of the applique should be at least 1/4 inch away from the stitches.

    • 4

Sew around the edges of the applique until you stitch the entire piece to your fabric. Turn the fabric as needed to keep the stitches even. Trim the excess thread once you have finished sewing.

    Hand Sewing

    • 5

Thread a needle with matching thread or three strands of embroidery floss. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.

    • 6

Insert the needle through the applique from the back side of the fabric or the inside of the garment.

    • 7

Sew the applique to the fabric, approximately 1/4 inch from the edge. Use straight, even stitches. The stitches should be parallel to the edge of the applique. Continue sewing until you have sewn around the entire applique.

    • 8

Insert the needle through the applique and tie a knot on the backside of the fabric. Trim the thread so it is very close to the knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fancy stitches, like the blanket stitch or satin stitch, can also be used to applique designs on your clothing or fabrics.

  • Use contrasting color thread for extra detail on your appliques.

  • You may need to use fusible interfacing on your appliques before sewing.
