Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first and most basic way to control flea and tick populations in your house is vacuuming. Vacuum furniture and carpet daily if fleas are present.

  2. Step 2

Launder pet bedding and blankets regularly. Change bedding daily if fleas and ticks are present.

  3. Step 3

Fleas and ticks are repelled by a variety of plants. You may wish to plant some of these along the borders of walkways and fence lines. You may also wish to dry them and make a special potpourri for those unwanted pests. Some of the plants known to repel fleas and ticks are lemon grass, mint, sage, lavender and basil.

  4. Step 4

Cedar chips in your dogs kennel area will also repel fleas and ticks. Dog beds filled with cedar chips are also available. Using cedar mulch in flower beds can also be helpful.

  5. Step 5

Entomopathogenic nematodes can be introduced to your yard. These little creatures prey on flea eggs and larvae. Nematodes come freeze dried, you just distribute them around your lawn and add water. They will not harm dogs and people.

  6. Step 6

Washing your dog in Dawn dishwashing soap will help rid him of fleas and ticks. The special oil removing ingredient in this soap will dehydrate and kill these parasites. Follow up with a flea comb to remove any remaining bugs.

  7. Step 7

Apply silica gels and food grade diatomaceous earth to your lawn, carpet, and dog's bed. These will also dry out fleas and ticks, which will kill them. Protect eyes and nose when applying these substances. Vacuum carpet thoroughly before occupying any room that it has been applied to.
