How to Find Other Lesbian Moms

Congratulations! You and your partner are going to have a baby and you want to connect with other lesbian moms. Or perhaps you’re a single lesbian with a child and are looking for some support.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • List of gay and lesbian groups
  • List of gay and lesbian gathering places

Step1
Know that there are other lesbian moms out there. You may feel isolated now, but a little research and some patience is sure to yield a good ol’ girl network.
Step2
Search the Internet for GLBT, gay or lesbian parent groups in your area. Many larger cities have an organization that meets regularly.
Step3
Contact GLBT groups with a focus other than parenting and ask whether any gay or lesbian parents are part of the organization. Perhaps they can email those parents with your contact info and you can begin to form a parents group.
Step4
Go where the people are. Frequent the gay coffee house, bookstore, community center or neighborhood with your child in tow and you’ll be sure to be noticed by other parents.
Step5
Play well with others. Take your child to playgrounds in communities that are known to be gay-friendly. Even if there are no lesbian moms there, other parents may have lesbian friends who have children.
Step6
Sign up for parenting or Mommy and Me classes. Even if you don’t meet lesbian moms, you may meet some other parents you can connect with. They may have lesbian friends, too.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be friendly! Everyone wants to know people who are optimistic and happy.
  • Don’t expect to connect well with all other lesbian moms. You’ll need more in common than your sexual orientation to strike up a great friendship.
