There are 3 different ways to receive an AmeriCorps application and apply to the program of your choice. Keep in mind that some programs have their own separate applications, so be sure to check the program listing to confirm that those programs that you're interested in accept the AmeriCorps general application.

The easiest way to apply for Americorps is to use the online application that can be found at the Americorps website, https://recruit.cns.gov/applyform.asp. By completing the application online you are able to send it to up to 10 programs at a time.

You can also download the AmeriCorps application, complete it and send it by mail or request an application kit by contacting 1-800-942-2677 or by emailing your request to questions@americorps.org.

To qualify for AmeriCorps State and National you must be a United States citizen, United States national or lawful permanent resident of the United States and at least 17 years of age. To qualify for AmeriCorps*VISTA, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident, be team-oriented, and be willing to take on a wide range of challenges. Most programs seek members with college degrees or at least three years of work experience. Individual programs may have additional qualifications, and you should review them when you apply.

Fill out the application step by step. It is similar to a college application and you'll need to provide all the information asked for including your education, criminal background, and employment history. Americorps is difficult to be accepted to and the application is your resume so do not be shy or modest.

A signed certification for each program you apply to is required for each application. You must print, sign and send a copy of the certification by mail, even if you apply online. There are no VeriSign programs available for certification.

    • 7

You will need two references for your application. Select people who you know well and who are familiar with your personal background, education, employment and professional skills. Do not ask a family member, class-mate or friend to serve as a reference. Teachers, advisors, work supervisors, coaches or someone else familiar with your community involvement and extracurricular activities make the best references. If you are applying for more than one program let your references know that they may be contacted multiple times.

A motivational statement is required for your application and should include your goals and strengths, what you will bring to AmeriCorp, and what you expect to gain from your experience. If you're applying online, make sure you have a proofed and final document ready to cut-and-paste into the provided space as you only have 20-minutes from the time you open the section to have it completed.

You should have a copy of your birth certificate, a picture ID or resident alien card, social security card and a copy of your high school diploma or GED on hand. These items will be required until after you've been accepted, but you should know where they are and have them readily available before starting the application process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to notify your references before sending your application.

  • Have all your personal and legal information on-hand before opening the online application form.
