Planning a fourth of July picnic can entail a lot of things. From choosing the right venue, food and decorations to making sure all guests are notified, the planning can make or break the celebration. If you are throwing a special picnic to celebrate the fourth of July, there are a series of things you should keep in mind to make sure the event is a success.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan for your Fourth of July picnic well in advance. The holiday is popular enough that people make plans for it weeks before the actual date. If you wait until the last minute, you may find that a lot of people already have plans and cannot join you for a celebration.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of possible guests. You need to decide whether only adults are invited or you want to make the picnic a family affair. If children are invited, you need to plan for entertainment and games and choose an appropriate time and place so children can enjoy the picnic without getting overwhelmed.

  3. Step 3

Choose the right venue and find out if you need to make reservations. If you're going to a local campsite or picnic area, you may need to call in advance to reserve a table or grill. Parks, beaches and outdoor venues tend to get crowded around this date and can make finding the right spot quite difficult.

  4. Step 4

Focus on simplicity and comfort. Jot down food options that do not take a lot of work to get ready and then decide whether you will prepare everything yourself or will ask other guests to bring a dish.

  5. Step 5

Think of decorations you can use to make the Fourth of July picnic more theme-appropriate. Focus on the basics first: a red-and-blue blanket or tablecloth, plastic serveware in the right colors or items decorated with stars and small sparklers if your picnic is in the afternoon.

Tips & Warnings
  • When planning for a picnic, don't forget the insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Depending on the weather and where the picnic will be held, you may also plan on bringing a picnic tent or large patio umbrella.
  • Find out in advance if the venue where you are having the picnic allows for alcoholic beverages to be consumed in public. If you are heading to the beach or a public park for your fourth of July picnic, you may need to stick with soda and iced tea.
