Step 1
Find out if fireworks are legal in the area in which you live. Not only will you need to buy them locally, but you should also not light fireworks for the fourth of July unless your city allows for their private use.
-
Step 2
Buy fireworks you can handle. If this is the first time you will ever use them, get the safer ones, such as those that don't have an explosive nature or don't require expert handling.
-
Step 3
Buy from reputable companies. Avoid street vendors, people who claim to have international fireworks or even small shops that do not display labels or seem ignorant to the safe use of fireworks. Not only are you risking buying illegal fireworks, you may also be putting your whole fourth of July weekend at risk.
-
Step 4
Avoid large fireworks displays that require a complicated setup. This is especially important with explosive fireworks such as the M-100s, which can be dangerous if not used properly. Even in areas where these types of fireworks are legal, cities often ban them because of their high risk for explosions and fires.
-
Step 5
Keep in mind who will be using the fireworks before you buy them. If they are mostly for children, choose the kind that produces a lot of light and sparks but little noise. If only adults are involved, you can go for shooters and crackers, which produce a lot of noise and can be fun for tricks and surprises.
-
Step 6
Look for fireworks that have a seal of approval and come either boxed or with an instructional sheet. This is the standard in legal fireworks and can save you a lot of troubles during your fourth of July celebrations.
