How to Buy an American Flag for Flag Day

Flag Day is an important event for Americans. Each year, this day is celebrated all over the United States by people of all ages. It is a tradition to display an American flag on this day. The American flag is symbolic of the freedom, strength and unity of the United States. Buying a flag isn't difficult, and there are a variety of different styles and sizes from which you can choose as you celebrate flag day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Decide where you will display the flag. You might choose your home, a government building or a church. You will also need to decide whether you want your flag mounted, carried in a parade or secured to a pole.
2. Decide on the appropriate size for the location at which you plan to display it. For example, you will need to purchase a large flag if it will be displayed on a government building. You can be more liberal with the size you choose for your home.
3. Get an accurate count of how many flags you will need for Flag Day as well as the rest of the week.
4. Decide on the material for the flag. You can choose to buy a flag made from things like nylon, polyester, cotton or plastic.
5. Locate a place to buy your flag, such as a local department store or scouts shop. Try the United States Flag Store and the American Flag Express websites as well (see Resources below).
6. Buy your flag through the Capitol Flag Program website (see Resources below). You can purchase an authentic United States capitol flag that was actually flown over the capitol. Flag requests are made through your state senator's or representative's offices.
7. Purchase your flags at least 2 months prior to the event. This will give you time to make any necessary changes or corrections before Flag Day arrives.

• Read all the papers you receive with your American flag. You will need to know how to clean your flag as well as care for it.
• Get permission from the proper authority before displaying a flag anywhere other than at your house.
