How to Connect With Earth, Air, Fire and Water on Midsummer's Day
Rituals vary from place to place, but it is the intention behind the ritual that is of primary importance. Rituals themselves only serve to give voice to what's in our hearts and minds. Connecting with the earth, air, fire and water, especially on a day so potent and powerful as Midsummer's Day, can invigorate and inspire you through the year to come. The sun is highest, strongest and lasts longest on and around Midsummer's Day, which is why the ancients knew this day gives rise to powerful blessings.

1
Light a fire. Bonfires have long been associated with midsummer. Campgrounds, parks with barbecue pits and beaches are good places to safely light your midsummer's day fire. If you don't have access to any of these places, you can place one or more candles on a stable platter and place it in the middle of a floor, with room around for movement.

2
Cast your circle. When you are engaged in Wicca and earth-based rituals, you want, if possible, to cast a circle to denote a sacred space. This unconsciously guides you to a sense of protection and greater clarity within the space. Cast your circle by walking slowly (counter-clockwise) around the area in which you will connect with the elements. You may simply visualize a white light around you and the circle, or you may chant, "I call the spirits of strength and beauty and goodness and protection to empower me in my prayers and my quest to embody the light."

3
Address, acknowledge and honor the power of the four primal elements. To do so, step inside the circle, face east and speak: "I call to the guardians of the east, the ancient spirits of the air, to serve and protect me as I serve and honor you. Witness and bless all within this circle." East is the direction of air, South is fire, West is water and north is earth.

4
Turn south and repeat the same incantation, using "south" and "fire" in the place of "east" and "air." Repeat for west and north, respectively.
-
5
Walk or dance around the bonfire or candles once, twice or as many times as you feel joyously called to do. Close the circle when you are finished by walking once more around the circle, counter-clockwise, and expressing gratitude for the day. A simple "thank you" will suffice (some believe that there is no greater emotion than gratitude).

Tips & Warnings
Ensure that you have a safe place for your midsummer fire. It's far easier to let your mind open and connect with earth, air, fire and water if you don't have to worry about the fire spreading.
