1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Set out all of your ingredients and utensils in advance.
-
2
Pour the sugar into a small saucepan and melt it over a medium heat. Once it melts, lower the heat until the sugar caramelizes into an even, golden brown color. Stir the sugar by moving the pan over the flame in an even, consistent manner.

3
Fill the bottom of the cake pan or flan mold with the caramelized sugar mixture. Make sure you coat the bottom of the pan evenly by tilting the mold in a circular pattern. Let the caramel cool and harden before pouring the custard into the mold.
-
4
Put the cake pan or flan mold into a large roasting pan. Fill the roasting pan with enough hot water so that it comes up to the halfway point on the cake pan or flan mold.
-
5
Crack the eggs and pour into a mixing bowl. Whisk the eggs until completely blended. Add the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and Kahlua into the bowl and continue to blend.
-
6
Pour the mixture from the bowl into the cake pan or flan mold, and place the roasting pan into the oven.
-
7
Bake the Kahlua flan in your oven for 50 minutes to an hour, or until the sides of the flan are firm and the center jiggles slightly when the pan is moved.
-
8
Remove the Kahlua flan from the roasting pan and set the mold on a cooling rack for 30 minutes. Once cooled to room temperature, place your Kahlua flan in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours until it is properly chilled.
-
9
Take the flan from the refrigerator and run a knife around the edges of the pan or mold. Flip the pan upside down and make the flan slide onto a serving plate. Cut the flan into wedges, sprinkle chocolate shavings and cocoa powder on top and serve.
