The earliest unsolicited mail delivered by electronic means occurred in the early 1900s by telegram. Fortunately, this early form of spam could be easily ignored by not replying to the message. Telegram spam didn't last long, because it was cost prohibitive to advertisers. Today, spam has run rampant, with billions of spam messages being delivered every week. To combat spam, SBCglobal began to use special spam filters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use your SBCglobal email account settings to log into email via the Yahoo! system. Provide your entire SBCglobal email address (myaccount@sbcglobal.net) as the Yahoo! ID. Type in your SBCglobal email address password in the appropriate white box on the Yahoo! signin page.

  2. Step 2

Access your account by clicking the "Sign In" button after entering your ID and password.

  3. Step 3

Look for the "Options" link after signing in to the account. (Don't start checking and managing email just yet, even though it is tempting.)

  4. Step 4

Select the "Spam Protection" link under the "Spam" section of options.

  5. Step 5

Choose the best option for how you want to manage spam under the "Spam Filter" heading. You can delete suspected spam immediately so you don't have to deal with it. If you receive email as a part of bulk messages from an organization, it may be misconstrued as spam. You may want to click the circle next to "Save these messages in the Bulk folder for." Select an amount of time to store spam from the drop-down menu.

  6. Step 6

Add a check mark to the box beside "Add the sender's email address to my blocked addresses list" to block future messages from spam senders automatically.

  7. Step 7

Move messages from the "Bulk Mail" folder to your "Inbox" by placing a check mark in the box under the words "When I mark a message in the Bulk folder as Not Spam."

  8. Step 8

Choose how you want to handle images in incoming email by clicking the circle beside one of the options.

  9. Step 9

Finalize your settings for the spam filters by clicking the "Save Changes" button.

Tips & Warnings
  • The spam filters reporting doesn't work when using a third-party mail client to report spam to AT&T Yahoo! SpamGuard. You have to use the spam-reporting feature in the web mail version of your SBCglobal email account (found on Yahoo!).
  • Every email account has a set amount of storage space. Save space by deleting the files in the "Bulk Mail" folder or any other folder where possible spam messages are delivered by the spam filters.
  • Always report any spam that makes it to your account to improve the spam filters for your SBCglobal account and the accounts other members use.
  • The AT&T Yahoo! spam filters don't filter out any spam from email checked for accounts using different servers. For example, if you check the email "myaccount@myaccount.com" using your "myaccount@sbcglobal.net" email system, you will get spam that came to the "myaccount@myaccount.com" email address.
