Deep sea diving, also known as scuba diving, is a sporting/commercial skill that enables people to dive far below the surface for a variety of purposes. A scuba diver can go sightseeing over a fabled shipwreck or help construct or repair a bridge. It's easy to learn how to become a deep sea diver, and with only a few lessons you too, can dive to the depths and explore the ocean.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Scuba gear
  • Deep see diver instruction
Step1
Establish your long-term goals. Do you just want to be a casual weekend diver or do you want to become a professional? The certification processes for either path are similar, with the difference being the number of certifications required by commercial divers. It's also a longer training cycle to become a commercial deep sea diver.
Step2
Train! Whether you go to a diving academy or to your local diving shop, you're going to need to learn the proper skills required to become a proficient deep sea diver. Basic training can typically be accomplished in one or two sessions, and basic certification is usually offered wherever training is provided.
Step3
Buy equipment. Scuba gear can be expensive when you first buy it all, but with care it can last for years. The most expensive piece of equipment you could get for scuba diving is an air compressor. The air compressor is used to refill your air cylinder. However, you can always go get air from your local diving shop.
Step4
Learn secondary skills that could be useful when you look for work as a professional diver. For example, learning to weld or handle explosives can be incredibly valuable to companies that work with underwater construction or demolitions. Some scuba schools offer this instruction.
Step5
Visit Scuba.com for information about scuba products, schools, trainers and certification (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit your local diving shop before you head to a major deep sea diving academy. Many local diving shops are able to give their customers the training they need to receive their Open Water Certification. Diving academies are more for those who want to become professional deep sea divers.
  • Only become a deep sea diver after clearing your physical health with your doctor. Deep sea diving requires a lot of physical exertion, and if you're not in good physical health you're increasing your risk of injury.
  • Be aware that you cannot become a professional deep sea diver without first completing a battery of tests and receiving certification in your chosen field of specialization.
