Freestyle Motocross exploded in popularity when ESPN created the X Games in the 1990s. Fans arrive early to the X Games' Freestyle Motocross events to find the best possible seats for the aerial acrobatics. Some Motocross riders become known for a new trick they create and introduce to the crowd (and judges), or by performing an exisiting trick to perfection as a signature move. Clifford Adoptante showed the world how to do a perfect Sidewinder at the 2001 X Games.

From Quick Guide: Motocross
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Motocross bike
  • Foam landing pit
  • Protective gear
  1. Step 1

Head over to your local dirt bike jump area, and warm up by making practice jumps to get a feel for the ramp(s). Warming up is crucial to ensuring your day remains free of injury.

  2. Step 2

Make one last practice jump and pay close attention to how long you are in the air. Mentally walk through the steps of the Sidewinder during this last practice jump.

  3. Step 3

Line up to try the Sidewinder for the first time.

  4. Step 4

Take off with enough speed to make the jump. Hit the ramp and go into the air.

  5. Step 5

Move your right leg over to the left side bike of the bike as you near the peak of the jump.

  6. Step 6

Take your left foot off its peg and release the bike for a split second. Raise your hands in the air.

  7. Step 7

Get back on the bike. It is important to put your body back over the bike instead of just pulling the bike under your body. You want the bike to continue along its original trajectory.

  8. Step 8

Look for your landing spot as soon as you get back on the bike.

  9. Step 9

Circle around to do the trick again off the same ramp.

  10. Step 10

Picture the jump before you do it again, with one difference: when you are beside the bike, move your legs like you are running to keep up with the bike (just take one step in the air the first time).

  11. Step 11

Continue practicing the Sidewinder, increasing the amount of time you run beside the bike in the air.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear your protective equipment for Motocross practice sessions.
  • If you are not comfortable with long jumps, No Footers and No Handers, put in some more practice time before attempting the Sidewinder.
