Step 1
Buy the rack that works with your car. Canoe rack dealers should have a list of car types and the racks that will work with them. If not, show the salesperson your car, if possible. Buy the rack that will be the right length and width for both your car roof and your canoe.
-
Step 2
Purchase the rack that is easiest for you to understand and use. Some roof racks use straps, some use clamps, and some use other types of hardware to secure the craft. It's important that you purchase one that you are able to secure properly.
-
Step 1
Load and unload the canoe several times. When you arrive at your canoe spot, you should be able to unload without too much difficulty. However, when you are canoeing for the day, you will be tired, wet and it may be getting dark. This is when your home practice will come in very handy. Make sure you know how to tighten straps and can hoist the weight of the canoe, even when fatigued.
-
Step 2
Turn the canoe over so that the bottom is facing the sky. Make sure that you have emptied the canoe so that you don't leave your belongings littered behind you on the highway.
-
Step 3
Lay the canoe on the ground behind the vehicle lengthwise, so that one end is very close to your car or truck, and the other end is as far away from the vehicle as possible.
-
Step 4
Lift the end of the canoe that is closest to the vehicle. If you are working alone, duck under and into the canoe and lift the boat by standing upright and pushing the lifted end of the canoe up and toward the car roof.
-
Step 5
Push the canoe onto the rack. If you are working solo, the back end will scrape on the ground a bit. It's unavoidable. If you are working with a partner, have her hoist the far end of the canoe and push the boat onto the roof rack with you.
-
Step 6
Strap the canoe down securely.
