Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the engine shutoff accessory at all times while you use your jet ski. The engine kill-switch is typically offered in the form of a clip that you can connect to your life vest. Should you ever fall off your jet ski, the engine kill-switch will safely shut your engine down to keep it from traveling too far from your position.

  2. Step 2

Ensure you have enough fuel in the jet ski's tank before you begin riding. Running out of fuel can make it incredibly difficult to dock your jet ski later (if you're out of gas you'll have to physically pull the jet ski back to shore).

  3. Step 3

Wear a life vest at all times. If you fall off your jet ski, your life vest (also known as a personal flotation device) will keep you from sinking in heavy waves. It will also keep you from sinking beneath the waves should you become injured and unable to swim on your own.

  4. Step 4

Keep your appendages away from the pump intake. The suction pressure can pull your arms and/or legs into the aperture.

  5. Step 5

Stick to areas designated for use by personal watercraft. These areas are typically away from surf zones or areas where swimmers or boats could be a concern.

  6. Step 6

Visit JetSki.com for the latest in personal watercraft information and safety guidelines/advice (see Resources below). JetSki.com offers the latest information about jet ski safety as well as tips for safe use for novices as well as experts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a class in jet ski safety. Many major jet ski locations offer access to instruction and safety lessons. Check with other jet ski users or use the yellow pages to find classes and instructors in your area. Prices for instruction are usually low.
  • Don't allow children to use a jet ski unaccompanied by an adult. It is recommended that any child under the age of 12 always be accompanied by an adult, and even those under the age of 16 should have a parent or guardian in the vicinity to help ensure safety during use.
