Today's seniors are exercising well into their 80s and 90s, and the exercise industry is developing new ways to welcome seniors into its fitness programs. When working with seniors, fitness professionals must be aware of both the limitations and possibilities of seniors' bodies. Seniors are capable of performing vigorous exercises, but seniors with disabilities and chronic disorders may require an exercise program tailored to their special needs. If you desire to work with seniors, you can earn a senior fitness certification that will provide comprehensive training in the most important aspects of senior fitness.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Camera or video equipment

Step1
Decide which educational model is best for you. Certification programs offer several educational models to choose from, including home study courses, online study and seminars. Some programs offer their classes through colleges and allow you to earn certification in a classroom setting.
Step2
Decide what kind of test you prefer to take. Depending on the program, tests will be in multiple choice format, open-ended short questions, or case study format. There may also be a requirement to present a photographic or video demonstration of you working with a senior. Some programs offer tests that can be taken online, while others require a closed-book exam to earn certification. That exam must be proctored by a local teacher, librarian, or member of the clergy approved by the certification program.
Step3
Find a senior fitness certification course that meets your educational model and testing requirements at International Sports Sciences Association, American Senior Fitness Association, or American Fitness Professionals and Associates (see Resources below).
Step4
Download or order the course material. Study the material thoroughly and complete all practice lessons. Coursework is likely to include fitness assessments, safety issues, strength and balance training, basic physiology, anatomy and gerontology, exercising with disorders such as arthritis or osteoporosis, understanding senior medications and motivating seniors.
Step5
Take and pass the exam. Most programs allow you to retake the exam if you don't pass it the first time.
Step6
Renew your certification according to the program schedule.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compare several programs for their testing procedures, certification renewal requirements, educational material and instructor feedback.
  • Certification is generally valid for 2 years and must be renewed through completion of continuing education credits, which can also be taken online.
