If you have a desire to work in fire protection and fly a helicopter, becoming a forestry fire pilot may be right for you. A forestry fire pilot is responsible for flying a helicopter all over the state. He also inspects the helicopters and performs routine maintenance on them. If you would like to become a forestry fire pilot, there are a few things you should know about this profession.

    Prepare for a Job as a Forestry Fire Pilot

  1. Step 1

    Meet the minimum requirements to become a forestry fire pilot. You must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.

  2. Step 2

    Visit a local community college, aviation school or technical school to speak with a career counselor about courses and certification requirements.

  3. Step 3

    Obtain experience flying helicopters. The required amount of experience needed for this position will vary depending on the state in which you are planning to work.

  4. Step 4

    Possess a valid commercial pilot license. You can obtain the license through an aviation school or technical institute.

  5. Step 5

    Possess knowledge of helicopter safety and be willing to follow guidelines. You must be aware of all forest and fire laws. Also, you must be familiar with the Department of Transportation's rules and other guidelines regarding aircraft movements.

    Learn how to pilot a helicopter skillfully and safely. You must know how to operate an aircraft under hazardous conditions.

    Take the written examination, physical and medical examinations, vision test and background check. It is mandatory that you pass all of these examinations before you can become a forestry fire pilot.
