How to Get a Job in Fire Protection

Due to the destructive and often fatal nature of fires, it is important to have trained, skilled professionals in fire protection. Fire protection involves the prevention and reduction of all hazards associated with fires. Fire protection also focuses on protecting areas, people and assets from wildfire. There are many exciting and challenging jobs in fire protection.

  1. Step 1

    Research the different jobs in fire protection. Before you decide on a particular job, you should get information about the available jobs and weigh your options. Some of the jobs in fire protection include fire fighter, fire apparatus engineer, heavy fire equipment operator, forestry fire pilot, fire prevention assistant, fire prevention specialist, fire investigator, fire captain and fire chief.

  2. Step 2

    Visit local fire stations to find out about careers in fire protection. This will give you an opportunity to speak with people who are directly involved in fire protection.

  3. Step 3

    Visit a local community college or university. Speak with an academic or career counselor to find out about available courses, certifications and degrees in fire protection. This person will be able to assist you with your questions and help you explore your career options in fire protection.

  4. Step 4

    Visit the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association websites (see Resources below). These websites provide information about courses, trainings, certifications and colleges and universities offering degree programs in fire science or prevention.

  5. Step 5

    Complete specific requirements for the job you hope to get. All fire protection jobs have different requirements. However, if you choose to pursue a career in fire protection, you must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.

  6. Step 6

    Pass the required tests. You must pass a physical and medical examination, drug screening, written examination and background check before you are hired for a position in fire protection.

    Visit the National Fire Protection Association website to get current job listings. This website has information about positions all over the United States.
