How to Use IRC in Trillian

Trillian is a terrific multi-platform instant messenger application. It enables multiple chat services to operate through a single program, eliminating the need to eat up valuable resources running several different servers. In addition to traditional instant messaging services, however, Trillian can be used with IRC. Now you can chat with people who use IRC without having a separate client running.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • IRC server
  • Trillian account

Step1
Start Trillian from your Start Menu, or from your desktop shortcut and wait for it to load. If there are updates available, allow them to download and install, then restart Trillian.
Step2
Click the "Trillian" menu option in the menu bar, highlight "Connections" and select the "Manage My Connections" option.
Step3
Click the "Add New Connection" button, then highlight and select the "IRC" button.
Step4
Type the server alias into the "Server Alias" text box.
Step5
Enter the server channel into the "Channel" text box. This is typically a more complex code, so as an alternative you can click the "..." button (also known as a "browse" button) and select the appropriate channel from the list.
Step6
Enter your "Nickname," "User Name" and your "User Info" into the appropriate text boxes.
Step7
Press "Connect" to use your IRC connection.
Step8
Click the silver gem in your Trillian contact list.
Step9
Click the "Select a Channel" menu option. This will enable a specific channel within an IRC server, allowing you to communicate in a chat room with other IRC users.
Step10
Type your message in the text box within the IRC channel. Once done, press "Enter" and it will be displayed in the chat box for everyone in the room to see.
Step11
Use emotes the same as you would in any other IRC server. The "/e" command is enabled in Trillian, although a shorthand version is to simply place asterisks at the beginning and end of your message to indicate an emote.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can start your own private chat rooms in Trillian without having to rely on IRC. Just start your own chat server by selecting the "Invite User" menu option for each contact you wish to include in the chat. When you're done with the chat you can simply close it using the "X" at the top of the chat box.
  • Be aware that IRC has an extraordinary number of channels, and thus spelling the channel properly is very important. Also, IRC can eat a lot of system resources (RAM), so avoid using it when working with other resource-intensive applications such as desktop publishing programs.
