How to Use AIM in Trillian

Trillian is an instant messenger application that enables users to chat with users across multiple IM servers. It's main benefit is that it allows communication via a single application instead of forcing you to use several different services. Whether you're a fan of ICQ, MSN or AIM you'll be able to keep all your contacts under one roof with a single, easy-to-use application.

Things You’ll Need:

• Trillian
• AIM account

1. Download Trillian from the Cerulean Studios website (see Resources below). Once the download has completed, install the application to your hard drive and run it for the first time. If there are updates available, then Trillian will auto-update, so just follow the on-screen prompts.
2. Click the "Trillian" menu option from the menu bar in the Contact List.
3. Highlight the "Connections" option, and select the "Manage My Connections" menu option.
4. Click the "Add New Connection" button. This will allow you to add the AIM accounts you wish to use in Trillian.
5. Highlight and select the "AIM" menu option.
6. Click the "Register for a New Account" menu option to create an AIM account if you don't already have one.
7. Enter the AIM screen name you wish to use in Trillian in the "Screen Name" text box. Proper spelling is important, so double-check what you've typed.
8. Type the password for the associated screen name in the "Password" text box. There is no password verification, so be careful as you type it to ensure its accuracy.
9. Select whether or not you want to have this AIM account automatically log in each time you start Trillian by either selecting or leaving blank the "Automatically connect to this account at startup" check box.
10. Press the "Connect" button to test your connection. If you've entered your account information correctly then you'll see your contact list display a bright yellow gem as well as any of your AIM contacts associated with that account.
11. Double-click an AIM contact. This will open a chat box which you can use to send and receive instant messages.

Tips & Warnings

• Emoticons are available in Trillian, and are displayed for your contacts using their own server's images. Be aware, however, that Trillian-specific emoticons (most emoticons that aren't smiley faces) may simply be displayed as text.
• New connections in Trillian are set to connect automatically when you log in, including new AIM accounts. If you do not want to log in automatically, you'll need to turn off the "Automatically connect to this account at startup" menu option in the Connections menu.
