How to Use MSN in Trillian

Trillian is an instant messaging application that allows users to use multiple instant messaging platforms with a single program. This eliminates the need to run MSN, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ and/or AIM all at the same time. It's easy to transfer your contact information, and all of the best features of MSN, Yahoo! and the rest are present in Trillian.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Trillian
  • MSN account(s)
Step1
Start the Trillian application by double-clicking the Trillian icon on your desktop or by selecting it from your Start menu. If you haven't already installed Trillian, then download it from the Cerulean Studios website and install it as you would any other Windows application (see Resources below).
Step2
Wait while Trillian loads and establishes its preexisting connections (if you've already set the application to log in to your accounts automatically). If you haven't set Trillian to log in automatically, press the "Global Reconnect" button.
Step3
Look for the blue gems that appear in your "My Contacts" drop-down menu. Each bright blue gem indicates an MSN contact who is currently online. Dim, unlit blue gems are MSN contacts that are offline.
Step4
Click on an MSN contact from the "Contacts" list. This will bring up an instant message box.
Step5
Type your message in the text box. The message length is capped at roughly 1,000 characters, so keep your messages relatively short.
Step6
Press "Enter" or click the "Send" button to send your message.
Step7
Copy/Paste text or hyperlinks into the text box to send them just as you would a normal message.
Step8
Add new MSN contacts using the "Add New Contact or Group" menu option. Simply choose a root for your new contact ("My Contacts," for example), choose "MSN" as the medium from the "Medium" drop-down menu, type the contact information into the text box and click "Add."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have multiple Hotmail or MSN email addresses, you can link each of them to Trillian for use with instant messaging. It's better to consolidate, however, so your contact info doesn't appear in your friends' "online" lists with each online instance.
  • Download and upload speeds between instant messenger services can be notoriously slow. For images and other small files it's practical to use Trillian, but for bigger files you're better off sending them via an email attachment.
  • Video chat is not available in Trillian Basic. You'll need to upgrade to Trillian Pro (and have access to a webcam) in order to video chat. Audio chat is available in both Trillian Basic and Trillian Pro.
