How to Fix AIM or MSN File Transfer in Trillian

Using the file transfer feature in Trillian is a snap. It allows you to send files to anyone in your contact list regardless of whether the contact use MSN, AIM, ICQ of even Yahoo! Messenger. Send pictures, documents and anything else that needs to be in the hands of one of your contacts. Occasionally, there can be problems with the file transfer, but most are very easy to fix.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Trillian
  • AIM account
  • MSN account

Step1
Restart Trillian and reconnect to each of your accounts manually. Sometimes there can be sporadic connection issues which hamper your connection's bandwidth. Restarting Trillian and reconnecting will reestablish a better speed and is usually enough to fix a file transfer problem.
Step2
Update Trillian to its latest version either by visiting the Cerulean Studios website or by turning on Trillian's automatic update function (see Resources below). From time to time, AIM, MSN, ICQ and Yahoo Messenger make updates to their own software, updates which can hamper or even ruin file transfer compatibility in Trillian.
Step3
Ensure that, when you are about to attempt to transfer a file, you are connecting to your contact via a live, recognized connection. For example, if you want to transfer a file to someone using AIM, then you need to use the AIM account that is associated with his own AIM account. This is often enough to fix minor file transfer errors.
Step4
Press the "Resend" button in the file transfer window. If a connection is very slow or has been interrupted, you can use the "Resend" button to start the file transfer over again.
Step5
Enable the "Direct Connection" feature. Direct connection allows you to send files to a contact via the chat window. This is not faster than using the full-featured file transfer system, but it is easier to see whether a file has successfully transfered or not.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trillian is perfect when you want to transfer a smaller file, but for larger files you may want to consider using an email server instead. Trillian can often have a very slow transfer speed, making large files take a long time to transfer.
  • Don't accept a file transfer from strangers, particular .exe files. There's no telling who may try to send you a virus.
  • Unless you specify in advance what folder you want your file to end up in, it will be sent to a default file transfer folder by Trillian itself. If you forget where the file is saved, simply perform a file search and it will locate it.
