In a perfect world, we'd all be using the same instant messaging service, whether it's AIM, ICQ or MSN. The problem is, though, that everyone has his own preference, which means some people can't communicate directly. Today, however, it's possible to send instant messages to friends and family members who are using different instant messenger servers thanks to Trillian. With one download, you can talk to anyone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Trillian
  • Instant messenger account
  • PC or Mac

Step1
Visit the website of the developer of Trillian, Cerulean Studios (see Resources below). From the Cerulean Studios website you can find tons of information about the software in both its Basic and Pro versions.
Step2
Click on the "Downloads" link on the main page. This will take you to the main download page.
Step3
Click the "Download Trillian Basic/Pro" link in the Downloads page. This will redirect you to the CNet.com Download page where the Trillian application is hosted.
Step4
Click the "Download Now" link on the CNet Download page. This will redirect you to the download page.
Step5
Wait for the download to begin. This will typically take 4 to 5 seconds, although depending on your connection speed, this time can vary. If the download doesn't automatically begin, then click the "click this link" link in the download heads-up.
Step6
Wait for the download prompt window to open. Once it does, choose whether you want to "Open" the file immediately or whether you want to "Save File to Disk" by clicking on the button next to either command. Once you've chosen a download action, click "OK."
Step7
Wait for the download to complete. The Trillian application file is roughly 9MB in size, so it should only take 2 or 3 minutes to download with a broadband connection. If you're using a dial-up connection, it could take as long as half an hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you download and install Trillian, you can set it to log in automatically to each instant messenger account you link to it. With this feature enabled, you'll just have to open Trillian to be connected to everyone, instead of having to log them in manually one at a time.
  • While it's possible to send files across servers using Trillian, there is no guarantee, even with a broadband connection, that you'll have fast or efficient download speeds. The best way to send larger files is by simply attaching them to an email. Be aware, however, that .exe files will be rejected by most mail handlers.
